President Obama has weighed in on Kanye West’s tirade at the MTV Video Music Awards, and not just in this hilarious mash-up of the president’s recent speech to Congress.
In real life, TMZ caught Obama on tape calling West a “jackass” during an interview with CNBC. The only problem: the president was apparently speaking candidly in an off-the-record portion of the interview, which ABC newsman Terry Moran also then re-broadcast to his more than one million followers on Twitter.
"Pres. Obama just called Kanye West a 'jackass' for his outburst at VMAs when Taylor Swift won. Now THAT'S presidential," Moran wrote.
It was unclear whether Moran overheard Obama’s West-bashing quote or got it from a portion of transcripts that went out to other reporters.
In an interview on Jay Leno’s first primetime show on NBC Monday night, West blamed the pain from his mother’s 2007 death for causing him to grab the mic from Swift, 19, as she accepted her Best Female Video award.
“And you know, so many celebrities, they never take time off. I’ve never taken the time off to really — you know, just music after music and tour after tour,” Kanye said.
“I’m just ashamed that my hurt caused someone else’s hurt — and I don’t try to justify it because I was just in the wrong. That’s period.
“But I need to, after this, take some time off and just analyze how I’m going to make it through the rest of this life, how I’m going to improve. Because I am a celebrity, and that’s something I have to deal with.
“And if there’s anything I could do to help Taylor in the future or help anyone, I’d like — you know, I want to live this thing. It’s hard sometimes.”
When Leno asked West if his mom, Donda, who died from plastic surgery complications, would have been disappointed in his behavior, he admitted, “Yeah.”
“Just dealing with the fact that I hurt someone or took anything away, you know, from a talented artist or from anyone, because I only wanted to help people,” West added. “My entire life, I’ve only wanted to give and do something that I felt was right. And I immediately knew in the situation that it was wrong, and it wasn’t a spectacle or just — you know, it’s actually someone’s emotions, you know, that I stepped on. And it was very — it was just — it was rude, period.
“And, you know, I’d like to be able to apologize to her in person. And I wanted to….”
As Taylor was giving her acceptance speech (she picked up the Best Female Video accolade for You Belong To Me), Kanye — who had earlier been pictured drinking Hennessy on the red carpet — grabbed the microphone and called Beyonce’s video for Single Ladies “one of the greatest of all time”.
According to Us Weekly, Taylor got “teary” after the incident.
It has also been claimed that right after Kanye’s outburst, VMA producers “kicked him out.”
“Security was told not to let him back in,” a source said. “While Beyonce was backstage, getting ready for her performance, she told the producers that if she won anything that should wanted to give Taylor the opportunity to finally give her acceptance speech – uninterrupted.”
Swift, 19, has already spoken out about the incident, saying, “I was standing on stage and I was really excited because I’d just won the award and then I was really excited because Kanye West was on stage. And then I wasn’t excited anymore after that.
“I don’t want to start anything. I had a great day. I’ve been sent so many text messages and everyone’s been really nice. I’ve had a really, really fun night.”
NEW YORK -- Green Day don't want to give away too much about their performance on Sunday night's Video Music Awards, but there is one tidbit they will share with us: Expect fire.
"If there's something that's flammable, and we're around it, we're probably going to light it on fire," drummer Tre Cool laughed.
"I just hope that Lady Gaga's hair doesn't catch on fire," frontman Billie Joe Armstrong added.
So Gaga, beware: On Sunday, Green Day will be packing plenty of pyro. It's gonna be a little bit dangerous, but for the guys in Green Day -- who have performed at three previous VMAs -- it's just par for the course. They rocked through a snotty version of "Armitage Shanks" at the '94 awards, appeared live via satellite in 1995 (a performance shot on "Spit Cam" after Armstrong encouraged fans to hock loogies on the cameras), then, in 2005, tore through "Boulevard of Broken Dreams." And that's not even mentioning the time Cool decided to
"It's always a good time. It's kind of a melee," bassist Mike Dirnt said. "You never know what's going to happen. A little bit of good, a little bit of bad, a little bit of ugly."
So on Sunday night, while they're busy terrifying the NYC fire marshal, Green Day will also take a moment to look back on how far they've come. To them, the 2009 VMAs are as much about the past as they are the future.
"It's interesting, because we've come full circle. I think the first time we did the VMAs, the stage rotated with the Beastie Boys," Armstrong said. "And, you know, Michael Jackson, Lisa Marie, when they were married for a week, and he said, 'They said this wouldn't last.' And we were like, 'It's only been a week.' And then we did the one in L.A., and one in Miami and now we're back here at Radio City, so, it's cool."
"Don’t tell my family, but I would love to do Hellboy 3 consecutive to the Hobbit. The first movie was 2004, the second movie is 2008 so if the third movie is 2012, 2013, it’s not that far off."
Teen star Selena Gomez hit the red carpet in Los Angeles Saturday for the 61st Primetime Creative Arts EMMY Awards..
.
Gomez, 17, recently revealed she hooked up with Twilight star Taylor Lautner earlier this year in Vancouver while he was shooting New Moon and she was filming Ramona and Beezus.
“Kristen Stewart was staying in my hotel. He would visit her, so we were constantly running into each other in the lobby — and we ended up meeting,” she recalled. “We would go out to lunch and dinner, but I knew he had paparazzi following him and I had paparazzi following me. So we literally just wanted to hang out, go bowling and stuff, and it went a little too far, I think. People were getting a little crazy about us.”
“But it was fun — I went to Vancouver thinking I was going to focus on my work, but instead I got to meet him, and it ended up being the best thing ever,” she adds.
“He is so sweet. Taylor has made me so happy. I didn’t know I could be that happy. You probably see it in the pictures! I’m smiling so big.”
